You press the brake in an Orange County driveway and the Rivian won’t start. The screens stay black and the handles stay flush. That’s usually a dead 12-volt battery, not a ruined drive pack.

Why the R1T or R1S looks totally dead

The truck still has a small 12-volt battery under the frunk. It feeds the computers, locks, lights, and the contactors that tie the high-voltage pack to the motors. When that 12V is flat, nothing wakes. The main pack can still hold miles. You’d never see them on a dark dash.

That’s the pattern other EVs show too. A 12-volt failure makes a healthy pack look empty. Software freezes can mimic it, and so can a key that won’t handshake. The order below separates those three without a tow as the first move.

Orange County had 210,842 battery-electric vehicles on the road as of December 31, 2025. That’s the California Energy Commission’s count. Tesla accounts for 65.51% of that BEV fleet. Your Rivian is in the non-Tesla share, and the 12V still rules the wake-up. The county’s ZEVs are 10.56% of the light-duty fleet. A black screen here is often the 12V, not a failed pack.

Tell the 12V apart from an empty pack

A dead 12V looks like a brick. There’s no chime, no logo, and no door pop. An empty pack usually still shows a range number, a turtle warning, or a charge alert before it quits. If you had a range figure on the drive in, write it down. If you had nothing on the dash, treat it as 12V until proven otherwise.

Accessories left on in a beach lot can drain the 12V while you walk the sand. So can a truck that sat for days in an Irvine garage. A long climb is a different failure. Ortega Highway and Santiago Canyon Road eat high-voltage range. They don’t flatten the 12V by themselves. If you died on the grade with a last-seen low percent, plan for 240V at the car after the 12V is alive.

Don’t leave the truck to hunt a stall on foot. Stay with the vehicle and work the checks.

Check the key before you reset anything

If any interior light still answers, prove the truck can see a key.

Phone key

Turn Bluetooth on and open the Rivian app. Force-close it and reopen it. Confirm the phone itself has charge. A stalled handshake in a concrete Santa Ana garage or a packed Anaheim structure can look like a dead R1S. Update the app later if it already opens. Don’t stand in the lot installing an update while the 12V is dying.

Fob and key card

If the fob feels dead, swap the coin cell the owner’s manual names. Don’t guess the cell type from memory. Even with a dead fob battery, hold the fob on the NFC spot the manual shows, often the door pillar. Keep the plastic key card out of a metal-heavy wallet. Tap that card on the same pillar if the phone and fob both fail.

The card is the backup that still works when radios don’t. Try it before you assume the computers are dead.

Soft reset if a screen still shows anything

A frozen center display can block Drive even with a healthy 12V. If you can see the logo, a stuck menu, or a half-lit panel, reboot infotainment first.

Press and hold both steering-wheel scroll wheels at the same time. Hold until the center screen goes black, about 15 to 20 seconds. Let go and wait for the Rivian logo. Give it a minute to finish before you decide it failed.

That’s the light reboot, the same idea as restarting a phone. It won’t close contactors if the 12V can’t power them.

Hard reset when the cabin is fully dark

No lights and no chime: try the full reboot next. It still won’t replace a dead 12V. It can clear a frozen vehicle computer.

Hold the hazard button and the right scroll wheel together. Keep holding for 20 to 30 seconds. Screens should go dark, and you may hear clicks. Release, then wait for the logo to return. A full boot can take a minute or two.

If nothing returns, stop pressing buttons. The 12V is the likely fault. More holding won’t invent voltage.

The 12V lives under the frunk

On the R1T and R1S, the 12-volt battery sits under the frunk. If the electronic release is dead, use the manual frunk release in the owner’s manual. Don’t pry random plastic. The manual marks the path.

Once the frunk is up, lift the cover the manual shows. Look for a loose cable or obvious corrosion. A glance won’t prove charge. It can catch a clamp that came off on a rough canyon road.

Don’t invent a voltage target in your head. Use a meter only if you already know how, and only on the posts the manual allows. Skip a DIY jump unless that same manual shows the exact jump points. Wrong clips can damage EV electronics. Independent operators jump an EV 12-volt on site as an EV job, not a gas-car jump.

Coastal lots, inland sits, and canyon grades

Orange County isn’t one commute. The 12V failure shows up in different wrappers.

Coast lots along Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Seal Beach mean hours of heat, leftover climate control, and a long sit. The truck may wake after a 12V jump with plenty of pack left. Or the day already used the range you needed for the drive inland. Electrify America lists an 8-port DC fast site at 401 Newport Center Dr in Newport Beach. EVgo lists 4 DC fast ports at 801 Pacific Coast Hwy in Seal Beach. Those help only after Drive works.

Inland north county is theme-park time and the 91. Anaheim’s Electrify America site at 440 N Euclid St has 10 DC fast ports. You still have to roll to them. A black-screen R1T in that lot needs the 12V first.

South county and the east canyons mix grades with a different plug map. Ortega Highway and Santiago Canyon Road are the climbs. Lake Forest has a Tesla Supercharger at 24372 Rockfield Blvd with Magic Dock, CCS1 plus NACS, 16 stalls. Electrify America lists 12 DC fast ports at 25825 Las Vegas in Capistrano Beach. EVgo lists 14 DC fast ports at Plaza Antonio, 22351 Antonio Pkwy in Rancho Santa Margarita. It lists 8 more at 27542 Antonio Pkwy in Ladera Ranch. San Clemente has an EVgo site at Ocean View Plaza, 638 Camino de los Mares, with 10 DC fast ports.

AFDC station data also shows two Rivian Adventure DC fast sites in the county, 22 ports combined. Countywide, non-Tesla DC fast charging is 175 stations and 591 ports. The Energy Commission counted 7,095 public ports in Orange County as of December 31, 2025. That’s 36.8 ZEVs per public port, against 24.4 statewide. Stalls exist, and they’re shared. A hunt on foot after a 12V failure wastes time you should spend waking the truck.

When the screens return but the pack is too low

A 12V jump can bring the cabin back and still leave you short. Stay with the vehicle and don’t start rolling on a dying percent. That includes I-5 south of Irvine, I-405, and SR-22. If Drive is available but the pack is too low to roll with confidence, treat it as an on-site charge.
