A Chevy Silverado EV that won’t start is often a sleeping 12V. On an Orange County job site, that mix-up is easy. The Ultium pack can still show plenty of range. The truck still goes fully dark anyway. Doors ignore the fob and the screens stay blank. The small 12V battery boots the truck’s computers. It also closes the contactors to the high-voltage pack. Until that handshake finishes, nothing in the cab wakes.
This is a boot problem, not an empty pack
Treat a dark Silverado EV as a 12V failure first. Prove the pack is empty only after the truck can wake. The range number comes from the Ultium battery. The 12V is a separate, much smaller battery. It feeds the modules that unlock doors, light the dash, and let you shift. When its voltage falls too far, those modules never boot. The big pack can sit there unused.
Every EV uses a DC-DC converter for this. It steps the pack down to about 12 to 14 volts. That trickle keeps the small battery topped while you park. If the 12V is worn out, the converter can’t save it. If the converter itself is weak, the 12V slowly starves. Either path leaves the same quiet truck.
A jump can bring the modules back. A 12V at the end of its life will drop again. If the truck has died twice in a week, stop jumping it. Plan on a replacement, not another boost.
As of December 31, 2025, Orange County had 210,842 battery-electric vehicles. That’s 8.54 percent of the county’s light-duty fleet. The California Energy Commission published those counts. Orange County holds 12.02 percent of California’s battery-electric vehicles. It’s only 8.33 percent of the state’s light-duty fleet. Teslas were 138,121 of those 210,842 battery-electric vehicles. In 2025, ZEVs were 28.76 percent of new light-duty sales in Orange County. California’s share that year was 22.93 percent. The county ran about 5 to 6 points above the state. That share is off its 2024 peak. California’s ZEV share peaked at 25.31 percent in 2024. The Energy Commission also changed its new-sale methodology in 2023 and again in 2025. Year-to-year comparisons across those breaks aren’t clean. Electric work trucks still belong in this fleet. A Silverado EV on an Anaheim or Irvine job is part of that shift.
What you’ll see from the cab
The pattern from the cab is consistent. The fob stops unlocking and the handles don’t pop. Screens stay black after the last healthy range reading. Then the truck refuses to go into drive.
Because the 12V feeds many modules at once, the failure is messy. You don’t get one clean code. You get a stack of unrelated warnings. Cooling, brakes, airbags, and charging can all complain together. That pile is a low-voltage signature, not five separate repairs.
Don’t keep restarting to clear it. Restoring 12V voltage is what actually settles the modules. If the truck was just serviced, don’t yank the 12V terminals. A disconnect at the wrong moment can create a bigger problem. GM is specific about that risk. When you’re unsure, get a diagnosis instead of guessing.
Job sites are hard on a 12V
The Silverado EV is a work truck. That shows up in how it dies. Crews leave one overnight at a site with lights on. A job box or a charger brick may sit on the eTrunk outlets. Those outlets draw from the low-voltage side while the truck is off. The 12V takes that hit for hours. In the morning the Ultium pack still looks fine. The boot battery is the one that’s empty.
Trailering keeps accessory loads on for the whole run. A loaded trailer is hard on a marginal 12V. It may not recover after you park back at the yard. Crews make that haul between Anaheim, Tustin, and Santa Ana.
Inland lots in Anaheim and Yorba Linda add heat soak. A truck sitting through a hot afternoon still runs cooling. Climate and battery thermal systems sip power while parked. That draw can finish a weak 12V by evening. Coastal lots in Huntington Beach or Costa Mesa run cooler. The same tired battery can last a little longer there. The failure mode is still the 12V.
A truck left for a week is another version. Alarm and connectivity modules never fully sleep. Come back from a trip and the cab is dark. That’s the 12V, not a pack that vanished in the lot.
Don’t hunt a stall for this
A public fast charger won’t wake a truck that can’t close contactors. The stall at 2404 E Katella Ave in Anaheim is a Tesla Supercharger. So is 1705 Flight Way in Tustin. Electrify America at 440 N Euclid St in Anaheim has ten DC fast ports. Garden Grove has 32 Supercharger stalls at 12891 Harbor Blvd. Irvine has a 40-stall site at 1920 Main St. Buena Park has 28 stalls at 8888 Knott Ave. Santa Ana’s site at 1008 17th St is the same kind of plug. None of those stalls help if the 12V can’t boot the truck. You’d be leaving the job site for a stall the truck can’t use.
Orange County had 7,095 public charging ports as of December 31, 2025. The California Energy Commission published that inventory. The county also had 1,475 public DC fast ports. Those numbers matter when the pack is empty. They don’t matter for a sleeping 12V. Stay with the truck and treat the small battery.
Where the 12V sits, and why the eTrunk fights you
GM put the Silverado EV’s 12V under the hood. It’s inside the eTrunk, on the passenger side. A plastic cover with tabs sits over the battery. With power, that’s a short job. The catch is the eTrunk itself. GM opens it with the fob, a dash button, or a fascia button. All three need 12V, so a dead battery locks the latch.
Hummer EV owners hit the same lockout on GM’s other Ultium truck. Porsche Taycan owners see a similar frunk problem. You’re not missing a hidden dash setting. The electric latch has no power.
The mechanical release GM put under the dash
GM left a mechanical workaround for this. Sit in the driver’s seat and reach under the dash. Low on the left, look for a gray cable with a loop. That’s the same neighborhood as a gas truck’s hood lever. Pull that cable twice and the eTrunk unlatches mechanically. No 12V is required for that pull.
It can take a second to find. The loop sits tucked up, not out in the open. Once it pops, lift the passenger-side cover. A flathead screwdriver helps if the tabs are stiff. Go slow so you don’t crack the plastic.
Jump the terminals in order
With the cover off, the 12V terminals are right there. The negative side uses a 10mm bolt. The positive sits next to it. Clip a jump pack’s positive clamp to positive first. Then clip negative to the Silverado’s negative terminal, or to nearby bare metal. Wait about a minute, then try to wake the truck.
A deeply down 12V may not wake on the first try. Leave the jump pack connected a few minutes longer. Some batteries need a short trickle before they hold. That extra time helps the handshake complete. Don’t cycle power every few seconds.

Symptom, then the likely cause
A dark dash and doors that won’t unlock point to a fully discharged 12V. An eTrunk deaf to the fob means the latch has no voltage. A stack of unrelated warnings means several modules starved at once. A truck that won’t shift despite a healthy range number never finished the Ultium handshake. A no-start a few days after a jump is a failed 12V.
